Equifax Data Breach Settlement

If you believe you have been affected by the Equifax Data Breach you can make a settlement claim here. This link was provided by NBC News, be careful that you don't go to a site that isn't legitimate to make a claim.

You may choose a claim of up to $125 or free credit checking. Neither is very satisfactory. $125 (or less) will cover next to nothing and choosing a company, that allowed the breach to happen in the first place, to be in charge of your credit checking is probably not a great idea.

Of course, even signing up doesn't mean you'll actually get anything. Apparently, there has been an overwhelming response of people choosing cash instead of credit reporting. Again, it's the case of a large company taking no responsibility for damages caused.

FYI - If you have a Discover card you can choose for them to send you updates if there is anything suspicious using your social security number. They are also very good at sending a text message if a large purchase is made. Check with your credit card company to see if they offer the same service.

Also, if you suspect your credit has been breached put a freeze on your credit with each of the agencies.

TransUnion
Experian
Equifax

or go to Annual Credit Report to access all three

Note: Mark on your calendar every four months to check one of the reporting agencies and obtain a free report instead of all three at once. You can get a free report annually from each of the agencies.

Update: Apparently the settlement amount was insufficient to compensate those affected by this outrage. You are now required to prove that you are paying for credit checking to receive anything and even then it is unlikely that you will even get the measly $125.
