Most items aren't worth paying the cost of repair because it is usually considerably more than buying new equipment so my advice is rather than throwing it away, try and fix it yourself. After all, you have nothing to lose.
According to most of the information I was able to glean from internet searches, the problem is with the manual controls on top of the player.
I found removing the cover to be difficult. There are two screws at the back but small notches on the sides. Once the cover is off you will find, on the bottom right hand side, a flat cable (mine was white) attached to the top cover. All you have to do is disconnect it and the player should work fine. However, you will have to rely on the remote to control the player.
