I keep a box of empty jars as I'm always finding uses for them so this year using them proved to be an inexpensive gift for friends.
I copied a page from an old hymn book, measured the height of the jar (the part that doesn't curve) - measured the distance around the jar leaving about a 1/2" overlap then cut out a Christmas tree (a star would look good too).
I used white glue to stick around the tree to the jar and glued the ends. Night lights or votive candles work great and a little ribbon or decoration around the top finishes it off.
