This wasn't something that I put a lot of effort into. I use Swagbucks for searching online and make the most of credit card bonus points. For example, American Express offers 3% back on supermarket buys and 2% at gas stations. There are higher points for using Amazon Rewards Visa card for Amazon purchases (I only purchase online if I don't have to pay shipping) and I keep an eye on the Discover bonus points that offer 5% for three months on certain purchases.
Walmart Savings Catcher is easy to sign up for and you scan the receipt after making a purchase.
