A visit to the doctor for a routine visit is no longer affordable for many Americans and screenings for skin cancer, screenings for oral cancer, blood pressure checks, and cholesterol lab work have fallen by the wayside.
Fortunately our local hospital Baylor Scott and White offers an annual health fair. There are separate events for men and women.
I was amazed at how much information and check-ups I received at no cost including: cholesterol, blood pressure check, BMI (along with recommended calorie intake per day), skin cancer screening, oral cancer screening. Also available were women from the Cancer Society, nutritionist, a cooking demonstration and a panel of doctors answering questions.
Kudos to Baylor for taking care of our community. Take a look and see if you can find one in your area and take some friends with you, it's well worth a visit. If you've missed it, see if you can sign up for an e-mail reminder for next year.
Also if you work for a large company, check with your H.R. department, they might be willing to organize a health fair for the company. It sometimes lowers their insurance rates.
