There is no need to use a whole dryer sheet for each load. Using half will give you the same results. (I've noted that some people cut them into 1/3). Another suggestion is to put 1-2 tablespoons of liquid fabric softener on a washcloth and put that in the dryer (use for several times before washing the cloth). I'm not sure this would be as cost effective though.
