I've always had a checking account so was surprised to find out how many people do not use banks. With more and more fees being piled on to the customer in an effort to circumvent all the new rules imposed by the government, I'm sure the percentage of those not using banks is going to increase.
So how do you cash a payroll check, and pay your bills?
Walmart seems to be the cheapest place to cash a check ($3 for up to $1,000) and you can also use their bill paying service for 88 cents or get a money order for 60 cents.
Another option Walmart provides is a Money Card which can be used the same as a Visa card and there is no charge to load your payroll check if it's direct deposit, but there is a $3 monthly maintenance fee.
I would think that if it's the same as a Visa card then you would be able to pay bills online using the card and avoid additional bill paying fees.
More info. on Walmart's Money Center Page.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has suggestions for inexpensive check cashing.
