I came across a documentary on Netflix recently about minimalism. Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus (The Minimalists) have been touring the U.S. talking about their lifestyle.
Minimalism doesn't have to be restrictive, it's more about valuing the things you have. Ryan Nicodemus says if you have a book collection and you love it, keep it. The idea is to not live in a house where you rarely use 50% of the rooms and pay rent on a storage building because you don't have room for all your stuff. Because along with all the excess stuff, comes long work hours and stress in order to keep buying things that in the long run don't bring you joy.
Joshua Fields Millburn says he only keeps or buys items that add value to his life.
Their takeaway phrase is "Love People, Use Things" instead of the opposite.
